Akaba cooked up that detour to Synchro as attempt to gather other strong duelists as allies against Academia. ~~It was a giant waste of time, and I told him as much.~~ The fastest way to find anyone worthwhile was joining the Friendship Cup, so I dueled for entry in Synchro's Underworld Arena. They arrested me during the match that would have gotten me in.

That prison facility is about as corrupt as everything else in that dimension; respect and favors from guards and prisoners are bought through rare cards. I didn't bother and my cell mates took issue with that.
